In a scene from the second part of Goethe’s Faust, the protagonist makes a deal with the Devil to gain earthly wealth. Outside his palace, rather than receiving all the guests at his entry gate, he turns away all but one female figure. Our subjects, from right to left, depict Debt/Misery, Need/Hunger, Want, and Care. Of the grey sisters, Care, here dressed in muted earth tones, not only confronts the Rich Man, but she opens his eyes to the meaningless pursuit of material objects.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed staring at these masterpieces over the past several months, and although I ache at the idea of their departure, I am eager to see what will be displayed next in the gallery.
What an inspiring marriage of two equals who advocated for financial equality, feminism, and spirituality through a dedication to art for art's sake. Oh, and it’s pretty fun to check out the virtual gallery tour of the De Morgan Foundation near Leeds, England.
